Arthur Honegger
Le Roi David
Arthur Honeggers Le Roi David is a gripping oratorio about the life of the biblical King David. Originally written in French, the work was first composed in 1921 as incidental music for a play and was expanded in 1923 into the oratorio version we perform. King David is not a fully composed drama, but rather a sequence of scenes that, like a series of pictures, depict key stages in David's life. Honegger combines narration, choir, solos, and orchestra to create impressive musical scenes, drawing on biblical psalm texts.
