The poet Queen Elisabeth of Romania (1843-1916) is surrounded by a complex musical cosmos. Whether it was the young George Enescu setting her verses to music, Saint-Saëns dedicating an organ piece to her or the singer Lili Lehmann raving about the premiere of August Bungert's song cycle "Mein Rhein" in her memoirs.
She always wrote, initially under the pseudonym E. Wedi, then publishing fairy tales, plays and poems under the name Carmen Sylva. During the Vacarescu affair, she supported the improper marriage of her confidante to the heir to the throne, was temporarily declared mentally deranged and the two women had to go into exile.
Her close friend Elisabeth of Austria, with whom she shared a passion for Heinrich Heine and Greek mythology, was also enthusiastic about the poems. Hans Sommer uses "Sappho" to compose his dramatic song cycle op. 6, which Franz Liszt praises for its intellect and taste.
