Partita in A minor
Vienna sounds different. Not the grand, ceremonial air, not the courtly politeness, but the grumbling, the mumbling, the melancholy that dissolves into a punchline. David Bergmüller continues his journey: following *Rhétorique du Silence*, the album that opened people’s ears, this tour takes him to Vienna; to music that sounds as though the city itself had composed it.
Johann Georg Weichenberger (1691–1739) is the focal point of this programme and a long-overdue discovery. Just as Sylvius Leopold Weiss embodies the Prussian ideal of sound – precise, architecturally structured, with a northern clarity – so Weichenberger embodies that ideal for the Habsburgs: improvisational, heartfelt, imbued with a warm melancholy that is taken for granted in Vienna. His playing bears the city’s distinctive character.
Bergmüller approaches this music with virtuosic lyricism and that subtle sense of what lies between the notes. Once again, our ears are opened. Once again, the lute unfolds its quiet rhetoric, this time with a Viennese accent.
