Daniel Johannsen tenor
Andreas Fröschl piano
Who’s afraid of Benjamin Britten? Not Daniel Johannsen and Andreas Fröschl – after all, they have just performed his exceptionally demanding cycle The Holy Sonnets of John Donne They began working together in 2018 and are now releasing their new joint CD in April 2026 A Britten Song Festival published. The greatest British composer of the 20th century, whose 50th anniversary of his death is being commemorated here, a composer of fascinatingly complex music, yet one who also melts every heart with his arrangements of folk songs – and this, in turn, is precisely what he shares with the other „B“, Johannes Brahms, whose pieces, likewise characterised by Apollonian clarity, delight the mind just as much as his folk songs touch the heart. And At the close of trading in November, the opening piece from Britten’s Winter Words, captures the mood of late autumn days – and of our era – with unsettling accuracy.
