KlavierTotal

In the Labyrinth of Fugues - Bach and the Performer’s Anxiety

Martin Ivanov piano

Programme

Especially works by

Johann Sebastian Bach

Let's dive into the fascinating world of joints!

Bach is considered the unsurpassed master of this complex musical tapestry—but what does it mean for performers to play these works? Martin Ivanov takes us behind the scenes of musical practice: technical challenges, emotional tensions, and the risks of playing from memory become tangible. In addition to Bach's great fugues, fugues by other composers are also performed, revealing contrasts and historical developments in an exciting way. Ivanov shares personal experiences and anecdotes from his everyday life as a pianist and from international competitions: moments of uncertainty, fear, but also triumph that bring every interpretation to life. Humor, empathy, and surprising stories accompany the music and open up a new approach to these timeless masterpieces.

Über die Reihe KlavierTotal KlavierTotal is a four-part concert series that showcases the versatility of piano playing. Each concert sheds light on different perspectives of music - as a composer, as a musician and as a performer.
The first concert will focus on the compositions of Martin Ivanov and the creative process of a musician. The second concert is dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach and the technical and emotional challenges of his works. The third concert brings together Martin Ivanov and his brother as partners for music for four hands, combined with humorous musical interludes in the style of Victor Borge. In the fourth concert, the virtuosity of Franz Liszt takes centre stage, with a special focus on his Hungarian Rhapsodies and his teaching methods.
The aim of this concert series is not only to look back and reflect on what has been experienced, but also to leave each concert with a completely new, deeper understanding of music. Each concert is an emotional journey in which the audience is not only entertained, but also carried away by powerful examples and passionate interpretations. It is not just music that is played – stories are told that bring the music to life and fill the audience with inspiration and new perspectives for each upcoming concert.
