Day of the monument

Federal Monuments Office

FOR CENTURIES Vienna is particularly attractive for artists and musicians due to its rich musical and artistic heritage. Their work has resulted in a large number of concert halls, which represent an important part of the city's cultural heritage. The preservation and sustainable restoration of these assets is essential. While many historical buildings, such as the Ehrbar Saal in Vienna's fourth district of Wieden, were built during the imperial era and used as concert halls or stages for outstanding musicians and artists, newer venues are often used in a variety of multifunctional ways. The Ehrbar Saal was built in 1876/1877 as one of the oldest concert halls of its kind in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. Elaborate craftsmanship techniques such as stucco painting, etching glass, stonemasonry with marble, copper work, difficult brass casting techniques and, last but not least, complicated woodworking techniques such as the Thonet technique or the bending of solid wood were used. Various guided tours of the concert hall are offered exclusively on Monument Day and you can find out more about the history of the building, the concert programme and the history of the women in the Ehrbar Saal.
