Atlántida Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Manuel Tévar, presents a program that connects Spanish musical heritage with the
Austro-German symphonic tradition through a refined chamber perspective:
Manuel de Falla’s Concerto for Piano and Five Instruments stands as one of the most distinctive works of his
neoclassical period. Scored for a highly unusual ensemble – harpsichord-like piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, and cello – the
concerto reflects Falla’s fascination with early music, Stravinskian clarity, and Spanish rhythmic vitality, where the piano integrates
into a sharply defined chamber texture, creating a work of precision, austerity, and subtle brilliance.
The world premiere of Fuego: homage to Manuel de Falla. Inspired by the Ritual Fire Dance by Albena Petrovic, offers a contemporary perspective on Falla’s enduring
influence. Known for her refined and expressive musical language, Petrovic engages with elements of Spanish color, rhythm, and
atmosphere, reinterpreted through a modern compositional voice.
Constancio Hernáez’s Reflejos de Córdoba continues this exploration of Spanish identity, drawing inspiration from the historical
and cultural richness of the Andalusian city of Córdoba. The work evokes shifting impressions – light, architecture, memory –
through a palette that blends lyricism with evocative textures.
Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, known as “Titan”, marks the beginning of his symphonic journey. In Iain
Farrington’s chamber arrangement, the vast orchestral forces are distilled into a more intimate setting, allowing inner voices and
structural clarity to emerge with striking immediacy. From its atmospheric opening to its triumphant conclusion, the symphony
retains its emotional breadth while offering a fresh listening perspective that highlights Mahler’s intricate writing and dramatic
contrasts.
