A concert as an exploratory journey through the transformation of piano music and architecture of music: The program moves from the symphonic ambitions of the young Brahms to the virtuosic flair of early Beethoven to the spiritual transcendence of bach, reimagined through the lens of Busoni.
 
Brahms’ Piano Sonata in C major, op. 1 though published first, was actually his second composition in this genre. Its massive opening chords echo Beethoven’s Hammerklaviersonata, validating Robert Schumann’s description of Brahms’ early works as „veiled symphonies“. Contrastingly, the inner movements – particularly the second, inspired by a German Minnelied – reveal its lyrical, romantic soul.
 
Dedicated to Haydn, the Piano Sonata in C major, op. 2 no. 3 is the most virtuosic of Beethoven’s early sonatas. Classical in structure, it introduces a „concertante“ force previously unknown to the genre. From brilliant technical runs to operatic slow movements, Beethoven pushes the 18^th century fortepiano to its limits, signaling the revolutionary path of his later career.
 
The evening concludes with a monumental dialogue across centuries. Originally the finale of Bach’s 2^nd Violin Partita – a meditation on grief – Ferruccio Busoni’s transcription reimagines the work for modern grand piano. Rather than a simple translation, Busoni amplifies the music’s latent harmonic power to create a „cathedral of sound“.
