Thamos, King of Egypt, KV 345
Egypt exerted a great attraction for many generations of European composers.
Mozart created incidental music with choruses and inter-act music, Saint Saëns travelled and set the Orient to music, Verdi did the same - but without ever having travelled there - and Berlioz wrote a fascinating lyrical scene for soprano and orchestra in which he set Cleopatra's final hours - her musings on her love for Antony and the self-infliction of the deadly snake - to music.
