THE International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition is Vienna's first and only regular competition for singers and pianists dedicated exclusively to the lieder works of Austrian composers. In addition to famous names such as Schubert, Wolf and Mahler, the focus is also on a forgotten composer whose fame has faded. The competition took place for the fourth time in 2023 with the artistic support of the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. It aims to give young talents a jump-start to their careers and the opportunity to prove themselves in front of a critical audience. The finale took place in the Ehrbar Saal, where the Ehrbar Prize was subsequently awarded by Cathrin Chytil together with Helmut Deutsch.

JEEYOUNG LIM studied at the Korea National University of Arts with Prof Hans Choi and completed his basic training with a Bachelor of Music. He completed his Master's degree and concert exam at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin with top marks under Prof Scot Weir, Prof Thomas Quasthoff and Prof Wolfram Rieger. Jeeyoung has won numerous prizes at competitions, including the sponsorship prize at Thomas Quasthoff's "Das Lied" competition and the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme Prize at the Wigmore Hall Song Competition. Jeeyoung thus became the first Asian singer to win a prize at this competition. Recently, Jeeyoung also won the 3rd prize and the special prize at the International Helmut Deutsch Song Competition. When Jeeyoung is not singing on stage, he works as the director of the Facebook page "Lied World" to popularise German songs in South Korea. He introduces various songs that are not often sung in South Korea. He has sung at the Heidelberger Frühling music festival, the Eppaner Liedsommer, the LIEDBasel - International Festival and several times at the invitation of Thomas Hampson at the Schubert Week in the Pierre Boulez Saal, with pianists such as Graham Johnson and Malcolm Martineau.

HELMUT DEUTSCH is one of the most sought-after and successful lied accompanists in the world. Born in Vienna, he studied at the Conservatory, the Academy of Music and the University of his home city, was awarded the City of Vienna Composition Prize and became a professor at the age of 24. Even during his student days, his main interest centred on the Lied, but he also worked for several decades as a chamber musician in all imaginable formations with many world-class instrumentalists. His international career as a Lied accompanist began with the soprano Irmgard Seefried, but the most important singer of his younger years was Hermann Prey, whose permanent partner he was for twelve years in several hundred concerts. Helmut Deutsch went on to work with many of the most important lieder singers and performed in all the world's major music centres.
