Female composers have been around for a long time. But they were only able to make a limited impact in their environment. Now is the time to free female composers of the 19th and 20th centuries from the boundaries of their time and perform their works alongside those of their male contemporaries.
Two opposites meet in this programme: Gustav Mahler, the celebrated maestro and composer, and his young wife, Alma Mahler. She worked on her works until her marriage, after which her husband interrupted her development. Who knows what could have been. But her songs let her dreams of love and nature speak for themselves. On the other hand, masterpieces by Johannes Brahms are juxtaposed with gems by a talented female composer whom he fervently admired. Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, married to the Austrian composer Heinrich von Herzogenberg, only allowed herself to give free rein to her talent at her sickbed: she dedicated 24 folk children's songs in a remarkable mixture to the children of other families. Because she didn't have any herself. Enjoy an evening of well-known masterpieces of song and sonata form, from Edvard Grieg to Johannes Brahms, from Benjamin Britten to Aaron Copland. Get to know the works of composers Alma Mahler, Elisabeth von Herzogenberg and Dora Pejačević. The power of nature and human passion was the common source of inspiration for composers.
A journey through songs and music with roots in folk music. Without a corset, please: where thoughts were allowed to wander, women could also enjoy a bit of freedom of thought within the scope of their various possibilities.
