Eloïse Bella Kohn is a pianist who lives in Paris and Vienna. On the occasion of the release of her new album Parisienne with the piano concertos by Massenet & Ravel alongside the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, she has put together a recital programme based around the inspirations of Maurice Ravel.
Despite his progressive illness, Franz Schubert composed the Three piano pieces. Oscillating between gloomy passages and unexpected brightenings in the first piece, melancholy and lyricism in the second piece and rhythmic obsessions reminiscent of the whirling of Czech rhythms, they radiate an enormous emotional power in the third piece.
Ravel explained that he "intended to compose a series of waltzes modelled on Schubert". We therefore have the opportunity to Valses nobles et sentimentales to their Schubertian model, which is characterised by the elegance of the Viennese salons. They are true jewels of sound lasting only a few seconds and show Schubert's talent for miniatures. Ravel's works provoked protests and boos at their premiere, so much so that the refined dissonances of his harmonies surprised the audience.
