From Lohengrin's burning sword to Isolde's extinguished breath, from the faun's dream to Franck's spiritual fulfilment. From a milestone in the history of opera to its impact on the history of music.
Often referred to as a "drug", Richard Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde a work that has influenced music history like no other. Tonality is pushed to its limits in it, the harmony becomes an expression of pure longing. It is not only the ever-increasing emancipation of chromaticism, the constantly rising undulations, but also the mystery of the Tristan chord with which Wagner expresses the tension of forbidden love and the associated longing for redemption - not least in transcendence.
Claude Debussy takes up these same compositional means and brings the afternoon of a love-loving faun to life. In César Franck's only symphony, all of this culminates in a triptych of religious ectasy and finally spiritual fulfilment.
