JOHANNES BRAHMS
LUDWIG TIECK
The poems within the enchanting love story between the young Count Peter of Provence and the beautiful king's daughter Magelone provided Johannes Brahms, who was tirelessly searching for something "composable", with the model for these expansive, operatic romances, which also include tender, lyrical and folk song-like elements. A song cycle of enormous emotional range and melodic invention, which is in no way inferior to the great cycles of Franz Schubert.
Returning these fascinating songs to their literary context is more than justified, if only for the sake of understanding, but also and above all because of the beauty of Tieck's language.
