Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58
The French-Canadian pianist Antoine Rivard-Landry impresses with his expressiveness, charisma and masterful virtuosity. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, he was awarded the Beethoven Prize at the "Wiener Klassik" International Piano Competition (sponsored by C. Bechstein), in which he also took first place in his category.
He has already made a guest appearance in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, in Vienna, Zurich and Montréal and is regarded as one of the most exciting young pianists of his generation. His interpretations combine technical brilliance with emotional depth and a fine sense of sound.
In this programme, Antoine Rivard-Landry spans a fascinating arc between Beethoven's heroic spirit and Chopin's poetic intimacy.
Beethoven's late Bagatelles show the composer in concentrated clarity - small musical jewels full of humour and depth. The famous Waldstein Sonata, on the other hand, unfolds a rousing energy and tonal radiance that only Beethoven could achieve.
After the interval, Chopin takes us on a journey with a selection of his Preludes into a world of the finest moods before his large-scale Sonata No. 3 concludes the concert in an intoxicating finale - a work full of passion, virtuosity and lyrical beauty.
