Supplementing and setting the mood for the concert The sound of friendship This discussion will take place in the evening (18:00 in the Ehrbar Saal) with free admission: The topics of discussion will be musical education, cultural influences and styles of interpretation in the field of tension between Eastern and Western musical traditions, exemplified by Shanghai and Vienna.
Questions to guide the discussion include: What is meant by the "Viennese music tradition" - and what is its speciality? How can the "Chinese music tradition" be defined? What characteristics characterise it and how does it manifest itself in the Western orchestral context? How is the Viennese music tradition passed on and communicated internationally - especially in Asia? What influence does the Chinese music tradition have on China's music education system and on the international success of Chinese musicians? What mutual inspiration and fields of learning do the two traditions offer, especially in the area of music education and pedagogy? What are the personal experiences and impressions of the musicians involved in the current collaboration: How does music build cultural bridges?

Organised by the Shanghai University of Music, MUK Musiklabor Klassik GmbH, and Benjamin Beck, principal viola of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
