The International Helmut Deutsch Song Competition is Vienna's first and only regular competition for singers dedicated exclusively to songs by Austrian composers. The participants have to perform a total of six songs each by Franz Schubert and from Hugo Wolf and four each from Gustav Mahler and Johanna Müller-Hermannwhose work was championed by Wilhem Furtwängler, among others. The choice for the programme is made from this repertoire.
There will be three prizes for singers (provided by World Culture Networks) and additionally three special prizes for pianists and an audience award (provided by the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna). For participants without their own pianist, the official competition pianist Andreas Fröschl will play.
The winner of the competition will be invited to give concerts together with Helmut Deutsch in the 2025/26 season, including at the NEST - New State Opera in the Künstlerhaus (17 January 2026, 19:00) and in the Ehrbar Saal (TBA).
