BARITON Raoul Steffani
PIANIST Alejandro Picó-Leonís
Songs by Alma Mahler, Alexander Zemlinsky, Hans Pfitzner, Franz Schreker and Erich Korngold
1902 22-year-old Alma Schindler - called the most beautiful woman in Vienna - marries the composer Gustav Mahler. It was not a happy marriage. Alma was a talented pianist and composer, but there could only be one composer in the Mahler household; Mahler later regretted this. Alma felt misunderstood and found another way to make a name for herself with her songs and affairs. To mark the 60th anniversary of Alma Mahler-Werfel's death, the Schubertiade Wieden also commemorates her connection with the Ehrbar Saal. In 1890, she performed together with her sister Grete Schindler and the particularly talented daughter of the piano manufacturer Friedrich Ehrbar, "Marie", as part of a school concert in the Ehrbar Saal.
Join us to honour this fascinating composer, muse and femme fatale. The baritone Raoul Steffani and the pianist Alejandro Picó-Leonís present a musical dialogue between Alma Mahler and her lovers and admirers, such as the composers Alexander Zemlinsky, Hans Pfitzner, Franz Schreker and Erich Korngold.
Raoul Steffani is the winner of the Dutch Music Prize 2023, the highest honour the Dutch state can bestow on a musician. We are looking forward to his debut at the Schubertiade Wieden!
