The International Piano Foundation Theo and Petra Lieven of Hamburg was founded in 1993 with the intention of establishing an alternative to many piano competitions, which - according to Béla Bartók - seem to be „made for horses, not for artists“. The aim was to pass on the art of piano playing from one generation to the next. Take Karl-Ulrich Schnabel's pedalling technique, for example: who better to teach it than those who learnt it from him? The Foundation is now based in the centre of Vienna under the direction of Alon Goldstein. Every summer, it invites eight outstanding young pianists to spend eight weeks in Vienna, receive lessons and give performances.
