This evening is dedicated to the Belarusian flautist and opposition politician Maryia Kalesnikava. Maryia gave people hope for change in Belarus. She became the symbolic figure of the mass protests led by women after the allegedly rigged 2020 presidential elections, for which she has been wrongly imprisoned for five years. Get to know Maryia a little better with us. Share her love of Johann Sebastian Bach with us. Listen to Maryia's thoughts through letters she sent from prison. Meet her sister Tatsiana Khomich, who fights for her release every day.
The evening will be accompanied by music from Dieter Flury and Ieva Oša.
Ieva Oša (piano), born and raised in the then Soviet-occupied Riga, prizewinner at the Schubert Competition in Graz, has since worked as a pianist at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Dieter Flury (flute), born and raised in Zurich, long-time principal flute of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and also its managing director, led a training class at the University of the Arts.
Ieva Oša and Dieter Flury have been working together as artists and music teachers for decades.
Maryna Yakubovich is a Belarusian actress, director and theatre pedagogue. For more than 16 years she was the leading actress of underground theatre in Belarus. In exile since 2021, she now teaches at the Mozarteum Salzburg and develops independent theatre projects.
